Five ways to pet proof your Christmas Tree
It is the most wonderful time of the year. Time for fuzzy sweaters, mugs of hot chocolate and Christmas trees! It seems our furry friends love this time of year as much as we do, not for the festive traditions but for the chance to play with their favorite giant toy (the Christmas tree). Here are some ways you can keep them off the tree and keep your sanity.
Choose the right tree.
Although fresh trees have a wonderful pine scent, they can sometimes be poisonous if pets eat them. For this reason, it is always safer to get an artificial tree. They are also very strong and hard to break.
Choose the right place to set up.
The prettiest part of the house may not always be the best place to plant your tree. An area near tables or couches can provide multiple launching pads for your pet to climb trees and jump. Try keeping your tree in a separate room, so you can close the door behind you when you leave.
Prune the tree strategically.
Having a pet doesn't mean you can't get a nice Christmas ornament. Just remember to dress up the bottom of the tree with sturdy wood or paper decorations and save delicate or sentimental decorations for the highest branches. Stay away from food decorations like candy canes and tinsel. Tinsel can mean surgery for your dog & cat and any other pet if ingested.
Be on the defensive
Sometimes no matter how hard you try, you may have a very determined pet and you have to deal with the interference that comes between them and the Christmas tree. A quick fix may be to try a repellent. A quick spray on the bottom of the tree should do the trick and hopefully keep your pets away from it. Get it here.
Ask Santa to leave early.
If all else fails, Santa may have already left with some toys and treats for your pet. This will keep them busy and hopefully take their mind off the tree and its decorations. Get some early gifts here.
